11TBs of footage, 3 hours of selects and many revisions later, a beautiful and timeless showcase of Chris Velona's Director//DP work was born.

When Chris reached out to me about this, we were both fired up about it. I was so honored to be trusted to edit this piece from one of my favorite DPs in the game. Chris Velona's talent speaks for itself. Leading up to this project I had the pleasure of editing some of Chris's projects and found the process extremely enjoyable and rewarding. Working with Chris's footage is a dream come true for any editor because his story-telling comes through in the footage. Before there is need for any explanation, I can already feel the story evolving as I review the raw footage. Receiving a 11TB hard drive of Chris's entire career as a DP//Director was like receiving a massive feast, and I was drooling. I enjoyed every moment, from making the initial selects, to carving out possibilities for an intro hook, discussing flavors and vibes and all of the above. One night everything clicked when I heard a song called "Human" by Sevdaliza. One of Chris's greatest strengths is connecting very deeply with the talent and crew. He has a way of capturing the pure essence of the moment in ways that never cease to amaze me.

Ingesting 11TB of footage is no small feat. After scrubbing through all the footage, I ended up with 3 two hour sequences of selects. This gave me an early vision of what the story could be. Although this is a showcase, I wanted it to tell a story and take viewers on a journey. I began building sequences out of some of the most impactful footage and then filtered the most potent selects into shorter timelines. Eventually the story began taking shape and it was a matter of a couple back and forths before we landed on a very solid direction to move in!

Motion Graphics and VFX

Building in tasteful, custom motion graphics and transitions was crucial to the flow of this piece. I enjoyed workshopping these moments and confidently building sequences that were dependent of these motion graphics throughout the process of creation.

The essence of a visual masterpiece often lies in its accompanying soundscape. With Chris Velona's breathtaking footage, it became imperative to pair each moment with sounds that could amplify its emotions and narratives. Sifting through libraries, I focused on crafting an auditory narrative, seamlessly blending natural sounds from the clips with carefully selected audio tracks. Each rustle, echo, and undertone was deliberately chosen to create a harmonious symphony that would envelop the viewer, making them not just observers, but participants in the journey Chris portrays. By layering ambient sounds, tonal shifts, and rhythmic beats, the aim was to construct a multi-dimensional experience that does justice to the visual artistry on display.

In today's digital age, the canvas is as crucial as the artwork. To showcase the vast and varied works of Chris, the web design had to be intuitive yet immersive. Beginning with a clean, minimalist template, the focus was placed on letting the visuals shine. With responsive design elements, the website was optimized for varied devices, ensuring every viewer received a seamless and rich browsing experience. The final design was more than just a platform—it was an extension of the story, inviting users to dive deep into the world of Chris Velona.

Telling the Story

Chris Velona is a master of capturing the essence of his talent. He has a way of creating a very natural space to work in, and knows how to bring out the best in every shot. Working with Chris's footage is always a treat for me. Very little explanation is needed because the footage speaks for itself. Finding the story was effortless and enjoyable as we operated in a magical flow state throughout the entire process of this creation. Chris allowed me to experiment with all kinds of inspired ideas before identifying a solid avenue to execute in final form. This key ingredient enabled the uncovering of some very special moments and built a solid momentum for the piece.

The Flavor and Spice

To accompany this beautiful footage, I felt it deserved some aesthetic love with the motion graphics to really give it some life and a crafted feel. I went a little bit unconventional with the intro motion graphics and created multiple intro cards to fit the theme of a project showcase. I wanted to create the sensation that each of these cards were from different worlds altogether, showing different sides of Chris and highlighting the flavors that he thrives in as a creator. Additionally, there were some transitions that were built in to build momentum and flow seamlessly through scenes in the piece. One of my favorites was the endless staircase that I built by using a top down shot he had from a Reebok commercial, and looping it down the center projection mapping it onto layers that allowed me to move a digital camera from a shot, through the staircase tunnel and transitioning to the other highlights from that commercial.

Giving it Life

I didn't just want viewers to watch; we wanted them to feel – to resonate with the depths of emotions captured in every frame by Chris. In the audio-visual world, sound plays a pivotal role in evoking emotions. Through diligent sound design, I ensured that every clip and transition was paired with the perfect sound. Whether it was faint footsteps, the camera whipping for a transition, or the build of momentum, the soundscape was meticulously crafted to enhance the viewing experience.

Branding and Design

Crafting the brand identity for this showcase was essential in encapsulating the spirit of Chris Velona. The visual elements, typography, and color schemes were chosen with great deliberation, reflecting his unique style and the vast array of projects he has been a part of. The branding echoed the rich tapestry of his work - a blend of raw authenticity and polished excellence. The logo was kept minimalist, ensuring Chris's work remained the star of the show, yet it held a distinctive signature, resonating with the nuanced artistry of his career. The design aimed to be immersive. As viewers navigated through the showcase, the transitions, layouts, and interactive elements led them on a curated journey. Every design decision was made with intent – to celebrate the genius of Chris Velona, and to provide viewers with a sensory experience that stays with them long after they've left the website.
